Optus Sport
Australian sports streaming app
Background
As the sole product designer, I was responsible for research, design, testing, and deployment. The solution I developed was seamlessly integrated across the entire product ecosystem.
Optus Sport is an Australian sports streaming service accessible across multiple platforms, including mobile, tablet, connected TV, and web.

They have exclusive access to top soccer leagues and tournaments, including the Premier League and FIFA World Cup.
Problem
Users struggled in locating and comprehending the content they sought, largely due to suboptimal design and layout.
These issues severely compromised accessibility for all users, leading to a higher than usual abandonment rate

Challenge
This large-scale project involved multiple stakeholders and required design improvements that worked consistently across all platforms, enabling the content team to confidently publish content with a uniform user experience.
Balancing the needs of the business with those of the user can often be challenging within a large corporation.
Research
Over several years, the issue gradually worsened, leading to increasing user feedback. We reviewed and tallied this feedback to present a compelling case to stakeholders on why prioritising this work was essential.
Research highlights
User Feedback
Users specifically highlighted the difficulty in interpreting certain content within the tiles, noting that the lack of clarity often led to confusion and hindered their ability to quickly grasp key information.
User testing
We conducted several rounds of user testing to uncover issues related to content discovery and to measure the time users required to locate specific assets.
Competitive analysis
I conducted a lean competitive analysis to explore the market and identify best practices, focusing primarily on major brand products such as Spotify, YouTube, and Netflix.
Solution
We needed to simplify the tile designs to ensure they functioned effectively in the current product while providing a foundation for future enhancements.

With this in mind, we established a set of objectives to guide us toward achieving our overall goal:
Simplify the layout
Expand versatility and adaptability
Reduce cognitive load
Reduce clutter
Enhancing accessibility
Simplifying the layout
The original designs felt cramped and overwhelming, so we decided early on to reduce the amount of visible content at any given moment. This approach lowered the cognitive load, making it easier for users to scan and find the content they were looking for.

The updated tiles were designed with a responsive layout, enabling dynamic resizing based on device width and ensuring consistent display across various devices.
Incorporating multiple variations of tiles provided producers with greater flexibility in presenting content, allowing for more tailored and dynamic layouts.
Low fidelity layout designs
Improving versatility
A key issue in the previous designs was the production team’s limited ability to set more custom layouts, which restricted flexibility and responsiveness to changing content needs. This made it challenging to highlight important assets effectively and adapt to evolving priorities.

In response, I developed three design variations that offer the team greater control over content placement. These options allow them to allocate more space and visibility to priority content as needed, enhancing both the content’s presence and the overall user experience.
What used to be one tile can now be used in 3 different layout designs
Expanding Adaptability
The redesigned tiles were made responsive, adjusting dynamically to the device width. They were also built to accommodate various states, allowing users to quickly recognise the content's status.

Reducing the cognitive load
The CTV platforms required a refresh to reduce visual clutter and enhance accessibility. The updated UI introduces a clearer separation between text and images, while utilising larger tiles that occupy more screen space. This design reduces cognitive load, making it easier for users to process content at a glance.

De-Cluttering the UI
One of the main issues with the old UI was the text overlaying the images, which only worked if the images were specifically tailored to fit. This approach placed significant strain on the production team and greatly restricted their options and creative freedom.
Make it POP!
The solution was to simply separate the text and image elements, allowing each to have a distinct and clear role, which enhanced both clarity and flexibility in the design.

By removing elements over the image, gradients for contrast become unnecessary, allowing the image to take centre stage and making the content more impactful.

Impact
Measuring the exact success of this work is difficult because we lacked analytical data to compare the performance of the different designs quantitatively.
Despite this limitation, qualitative feedback from customers painted a clear picture of its positive impact. Many expressed that the changes were a welcome improvement, and the updates had significantly enriched their overall viewing experience.
User feedback
“It’s such a small change, but it makes a huge difference to my daily use. Great work!”
“Loving the new look. It’s easier on the eyes and way more user-friendly.”
“New layout is nice”
